flywheel problems ?

i have a 99 f-250 with a 7.3 powerstroke i have the manual 6 speed. i have noticed a lot of white to grey smoke when i start it when it sits at work all day i have a friend who has a 2000 auto and he does not have this problem. we were told by a guy who works on powerstrokes that the flywheel is worn out and is making my engine off balance when i start it and the cam sensor is just adjusting to the vibration when it warms up the smoke goes away has anyone here of this before

any help would be appretiated

thanks

I think that's the craziest explanation I've ever heard. It'w not uncommon to have a little white smoke at startup. It usually means that one or more glow plugs is on the way out but still partially functional. Don't worry about it unless you start getting what you might consider excessive smoke.

i think it is excessive i dont know it last for a good little while and the smoke was blowing at a co-workers truck and he couldnt get in it till it aired out because of the diesel fuel smell left in the truck

it probably smokes for a good 5 minutes or so

if you have any ideas i would greatly appretiate them

thanks

I agree with johnsdiesel. Sounds like one or more glow plugs kaput. It goes away after five minutes because the temp in the cylinder of the suspect plugs finally rises high enough for complete combustion. As for the flywheel theory...

How many miles on the truck? Could be a combination of glow plugs and injector o-rings. Definately take it somewhere else than the place with the "interesting" flywheel theory.

The flywheel being loose definitely has an effect on how the engine idles, and its combustion efficiency. But I don't think the 6 speed ever had the dual mass flywheel so we can rule that out in your case. A little smoke is acceptable. To try to eliminate it when no other problem is manifest is not the wisest use of money in my opinion. Still, it does sound a little odd for a 99 to be doing that so early so I would keep my eye on it anfd get oil analysis, like any engine, when you change it in case something really is going wrong. Otherwise you are guessing.

the truck has 106000 miles on it. if the glow plugs or injector o-rings were bad would that show up on a computer analysis or is it just a guessing game cause when the computer showed that the cam sensor was out that is the only thing that the computer showed was wrong.
