Ok so lots of bad noises coming from bellhousing when I started my truck today. Pulled the inspection cover and found that one of the springs has broken in the flywheel. I never measured backlash cause I believe its safe to say the flywheel is shot.
My problem is, I am 250mi from home. What happens as the flywheel comes apart more, I've never had ANY of my trucks in a shop and don't want to start now. The way I see it the spring is eventually going to work loose from the flywheel or maybe not and just make a bunch of noise.
Looking for anyone's experience that is similar to this.
Thanks much in advance
Ryan Lutman
The flywheel doesn't have springs. The clutch disc and pressure plate do have springs. I'm guessing it's your disc that has the broken spring. Personally I would drive it the 250 miles. Unless you are towing or have a heavy load in the bed. Just be easy on it.
EDIT!!! Wait is it a dual mass flywheel? I typed to fast, I really don't know anything about the d/m set up. Maybe somebody will pipe up. Sorry.

yes its a 95 w/ dual mass flywheel, which is of course a pos in my opinion but I'd really like to avoid changing it in a public parking lot at this point, thanks for the advice. It would take some major arguement to make me not drive it, it will not be loaded
Thanks again
I drove mine for about a thousand miles before I replaced it. Just take her easy. Mine made a violent chatter only at idle for a couple seconds till it smoothed out. Look into a LUK replacement setup you won't be dissapointed. Good Luck!
It all makes sense now. Here recently whenever I start up the truck- as well as lug it and depress the clutch quick- I get a pretty wicked shudder and rattle like its missing. I've been trying to determine the problem thinking it was fuel or hpop related-never thought about the flywheel effecting how the motor runs. Anyway its always rattled when I shut it off since I bought it so I knew the time would come to upgrade and have been planning for it. I just can't decide between the Luk cerrametalic or a south bend Con O. Stage I injectors and 4pos chip are coming this summer. Any one have any pro's or con's of either setup???
Thanks again
Ryan
