i have a 1992 f250 with a deisel. at about 200,000 miles i put a new clutch in and had the surface of the flywheel ground.
it worked great for the first few thousand miles, then it started to chatter in first gear and reverse. i have been told it is the clutch, the flywheel, air in the hydrolic system.
has anyone encountered this, or know what the problem is before i go and put a new clutch in and buy a new $1000.00 flywheel? and if it is the flywheel is there any choice beside the very expensive factory flywheel?
I don't know if you have a dual mass flywheel on the 1992, but I had one on my 1997. That could explain the noise you describe. I replaced my clutch and flywheel with a LuK, which was less expensive than only the factory replacement flywheel.
thanks john
i do have a dual mass flywheel.
the problem isn't really a noise as much as a chatter just like you get when your clutch is worn down ready to be replaced.
can you tell me who you got your LUK setup from?

I had Aamco do the work and they bought the LuK setup for me. A lot less money than the factory setup and I don't have to worry as much about the flywheel in the future.
John , I'm trying to budget(get prepared) for a clutch replacement on my 99 psd so my question is...what did the Parts and labor Cost when you had aamco replace your clutch...Also..Did you get a price quote from ford before letting aamco do the job????thanks for your help.....fd

Clutch was $545.36, Flywheel was $525. I don't remember the labor cost breakdown. That will vary depending on where you live anyway. The cost for the flywheel alone from Ford was around $1000. No way was I going to go with a replacement dual mass flywheel that I would have to replace again in the future. I'm sure Ford would not install a clutch/flywheel other than their own, so I let Aamco do it.

I have a 96 powerstroke and the clutch was slipping and I was getting noise. A friend of mine is a mechanic and checked it for me. He said the 2 piece flywheel was raddeling and making noise. I got a luk solid flywheel an clutch for 575. I found 2 places that carried this. www.dialaclutch.com and www.carolinaclutch.com
I ended up getting from dialaclutch because the cost was less and I was able to order it online at night

Two problems, the dmfw was not intended to be resurfaced. Depending on who did the job did they disassemble the flywheel and then surface it or surface it as 1 piece. Ford recommends the flywheel be replaced with the clutch. Your old dmfw cannot handle the bite of a new clutch. You will either need to repplace the entire setup with a new dmfw and clutch or with the upgraded Luk version. The Luk is a major improvement over the stock unit.
