Thumbs up nice thumpy exhaust note...

I had a FM40 cat back and it sounded good from idle to ~ 1900 RPM, then it got all raspy and tinny sounding through the rest of the RPM range. I "deleted" the cat and replaced it with an 18" glasspack and it sounds low deep and thumpy like a big block now, already had 2 people ask what I'm running for exhaust, it sounds that good and I only did it 4 days ago. The combo of a glasspack feeding the FM40 totally changed the sound of the truck, now when it goes over 4000 rpm the exhaust seems to go silent and it sounds like there is a supercharger on there whining away at high RPM, I'm so happy I might have to give my woman a little lovin!!!

Sounds great. Can you get a sound clip by any chance? I'd love to hear it. Interesting combo.

Woudn't get a sticker in Mass. for the reason of the lack of cat and the "unneccesary" exhaust noise!

We don't get inspected or tested here. The cat. conveter does just that, converts one poisonus gas to another.
If the glass pack makes it sound better, then one could use somthing like the Edelbrock rpm series muffler. strait through like a glass pack. It is Stainless with a lifetime waranty. Would last longer under the heat of towing.

Actually, I took the glasspack off yesterday. I welded a 2.5" dia. purple hornie in there and it did sound very good, but when I had to get on it a little towing my dads trailer I could tell the engine wasnt breathing very good (didnt wind up like she usually does). I'm going to try a 3" glasspack when it gets here (no one local stocks anything larger than 2.5 inch exhaust part). As far as inspection, I will be welding the cat. back in about a week before I'm due . I had my 5.4 expy inspected twice with no cat though so I might not need to worry about it.

I am actually thinking about trying one of the hi-flow cats from magnaflow (to be legal) follwed by a 3" glass pack into my dual out FM40... the glass pack is what took the raspy/tinny edge off the exhaust sound and now I'm addicted to it (plus I just got a new mig, I love playin with this thing - it so much better than using an arc.)

I'll try to make a sound clip when I get the 3" glasspack in.

Be careful before you waste alot of time, the Flowmaster 40 series muffler is what give my system its bass (which I think is what your looking for) and the glasspack allows me to "turn down the treble" if you will, for a nice even sounding exhaust. The best way I can describe my exhaust sound is going from an indy car (normal v10 with cat back) to a small block v-8 sound with a medium lift cam that turns 7k rpm (to my ears anyway). I think the 3" pipe all the way to the rear axle makes a big diff as well, if yours is 2.5 all the way from the header flanges back, yours wont sound the same, it will be more crackly/bark (i.e. not as deep sounding).

I am looking at a set of the strong headers on ebay, probably have them on in a month or two and go though this trial and error process again then. People call me **** but they always like my work hehe. Let me know if you find a setup that sounds good with your headers.

carefull with the strong headers

those are the same headers i got, be careful or at least know this, they are NOT a direct bolt on, quality looked ok but ihad to flatten one tube just a litle bit to fit on the right side to clear the frame also on the left side you will have to cut a chunk out of the flange for the dipstick tube, that side fit well other then the tube, and it has exhaust type flange/collector on it so all that you will fit on there is 2.25 inch pipe, thas what i have on mine not 2.5 my mistake. do youthink if i ran 3" pipe out of the mufflers back would deepen anything up a bit? thanks

I think it would make it sound deeper but I would run it off the headers (weld on new flanges) with a crossover pipe to keep your low end tourqe. I plan to start with 3" pipe off the header flanges into high flow cats which will feed into 3" glasspacks, then into a 3" inlet/2.5 inch outlet FM40's, running the pipe out the back. I'm not sure where I'll put the crossover in yet, most likley before the cats about 12-16 inchs from the flanges. I still have abit of research to do but thats what I'm thinking currently.
