Actually, I didn't use pvc pipe, but rather black abs plastic like for plumbing sytems. The 3" i.d. drain pipe fitting measures exactly 4" on the outside flange portion. Both ends fit very tightly--I actually had to force it into the filter end with some moderate effort. I don't think there is any possibility of it letting dust in, and the whole setup looks very clean.

How did you rig up a support for the filter? Did you use a 45 degree ell? Was it of sufficient length to position the filter where you wanted it? Thanks.
PickSty, not sure what you mean by 45 degree ell, but I just let my filter rest on the inner fender well. With the size of the filter, the stock intake hose ended up in almost the exact same location as when the filter box was there. The filter end is pretty snug with the seet metal, and the battery and brake reservoir hold it in pretty good.
He's talking about replacing the stock air hose with 4" exhaust tubing. Also, the stand keeps the filter from resting on the fenderwell so that there is no restriction around any point on the filter. That's why a lot of the homemade "Tymar-like" systems do not really resemble the Tymar intake. What I think is humorous is that "Tymar" has come to mean any open element intake when in reality it is a company name, not a style of intake. If you didn't buy it from Tymar, you don't have one, you have an open element intake.

I am referring to the ABS sewer pipe you used. What is its shape? Is it a straight piece, or is it curved? If it's straight, what is its length? Thanks.

Actually, it's an acronym that evolved into a company name that evolved into an "open element" description.

Think I'm kidding? Call Dale and ask him.
Remember the thread on TDS about three years ago when he was talking about it? I thought it was funny at the time, but he went and made a company out of it......good old American ingenuity at work.

Has anyone tried to build one of these intakes for a van w/PSD? Do they sell a setup for the E350? Not much room under the hood to do anything, just curious.
