How can an air filter draw air but not water? I like what I see on the "Tymar" and home made "Tymar" style filters but don't understand how a filter can be water resistant and flow air at the same time.
I think it's the same technology that brings us breatheable waders. The filter on the TYMAR is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water. If you were to immerse it in water, some would eventually get through, but the limited amount that might get on one while under the hood of a truck isn't a problem.
You can get one of those pre-filter socks that go over the filter, they claim to repell water. I know the one on my quad does, beads up then rolls off.
I had a lot of concerns before installing my TYMAR, too. I live in Seattle, where it rains 450 days a year, and I've never had a problem with my filter getting wet.
