I am going to build a new tymar type intake setup on my 1999 truck I have a few ? 's I will remove the intake box. I see there is a sensor in the box. What do I do with it? What angle do I cut and weld the 4" steel pipe or can it be just straight? I guess just drill a hole in the pipe for the air restrictor gage? I will use the NAPA 6637 filter. How can I mount it so it will not rub a hole into the filter? This year truck has a flexable hose all the way to the box so I guess I do not need any flexable hose, I can just use it cant I? what else do I need to Know? Your help will be most appreciated.
Set the sensor aside and don't worry about it. Don't bother with the air restriction gauge. The filter would have to be completely clogged in order to register on the factory gauge. I don't know the angle of the 4" elbow. The Tymar uses a "stand" that clamps around the filter to keep the filter from sitting directly on the fender.
I did my 99 about a month ago. All i did was install a 45 degree 3" i.d. pvc pipe fitting between the stock flex hose and my 6637 filter, removed the stock air box,and installed two band clamps. That was it. Works great.
John has it right on the money on the sensor and the air restriction gauge. I might even go as far to throw that gauge far as i can out in the sage brush too. another thing i see is that you have a lot of faith in Napa Filters. I hope you don't dust your engine with your home made job too. You can probally go down to some muffler shop to have that metal piece made too.
I've bought mine from Dale at Tymar. You can do that or I'm sure others have places they get theirs. I don't know the part number off hand, maybe someone else could chime in. Quadzilla, you out there?
I went to the donaldson website last night and looked in their cross reference table. I entered the napa 6637 number and it kicked back the Donaldson Filter number ( B 085011 ). I am building mine this weekend if the local heavy equipment store has them in stock. Love the tymar product but cant see paying an extra 60 or 70 bucks for a kit when you can purchase the pieces yourself. I will post pics and instructions with measurements for those that are watching the cost but still want the performance.
I have a 6637 coming in to my local Napa store tommorow. Their price is $37. Is there a piece of pipe that will be needed to connect it to the flex pipe on the turbo? Is PVC OK to use or should I get 4" exaust pipe? Thanks...
Nuclearmonster has the right part # for the Donaldson air filter and i think the cummins part # is 2912986 and the Hercules is B085008 & 400000642 and if it was me i would go with the 4" steel pipe over the pvc pipe.
Dont see why the PVC wouldnt' work. Just make sure the fittings are nice and tight. I think I will use the 4" exhaust tubing since I have some sitting in the shop. let me know how the setup works.
They only problem that i can see with PVC irrigation pipe or PVC Conduit "samething". PVC Conduit is desinged not to break down from Ultra Violet light as fast. Your going to need two pieces of pipe and a fitting. The glue is not desinged for temps over 80 degrees. You might find a long Sweeping 45 degree elbow of 4" conduit would work better because its one piece. PVC has a better C fatcor than Steel far as friction loss of air and water traveling through it.
