u cant really use a programer on pre obd-2 trucks. u'll need a custom chip burned. i suggest *cant say name cuz i assume this site doesnt allow suggesting other brands so ill just say it begns with an a and ends with a n* or diablo.
There's no programmers for Pre-96's and never will be, the market just isn't there.
For 96+'s Hypertech is the only one I know of that makes a programmer for us, but I just got done returning mine for my '96 4.9L.
$300 and I had to use 91+ octane, made my engine light come on after 100 miles didn't notice any power difference and actually gave me slower 1/4 times.

I put in a Superchip which I bought from Motorhaven.com. (found them to have the same of better price of all the place I looked)
I have a 92 with a 4.9 5 speed 4x4 with 3.08 rear end. I also took off the second cat and put a strait pipe through. I also have the cold air intake K&N filter.
I noticed bit of difference, not much change in gas mileage, maybee 1-2 mpg, a little extra throttle response, but not a whole lot more with 87 octane gas. With 90 or 91 octane gas, the gas mileage stayed about the same, but more throttle response and a little snappier. Probably why the gas mileage stayed the same, I didn't let off of the gas much.
I have a friend that has the same basic truck as I do, only with the 4speed auto and he notices more of a difference. The chip changed his shift pattern to be more aggresive. His gas mileage didn't change much, if any but seemed to have more gettup.
If you are planning on making more mods to the truck, I would hold off on the chip until all the mods are made, then get a custom chip. If you are done making mods, try the chip, you have nothing to lose. When I bought mine, they gave me a 30 day satisfaction guarentee. That should give you enough time to tell if it is worth it to you or not.
The best person to answer that would be Ken in the "computer chips and tuner" forum. He really knows his stuff. If I recall correctly I either paid $225 for my chip or $125. I am thinking $225, but I would have to dig up the reciept.
Check out Motorhaven.com if you want prices and more information.
