I'd turn it in to the authorities without a second thought. That's just my nature. A couple of years ago, my family was waiting to get on a plane to Florida and we were sitting in the lounge. I looked over by the heating register and saw a black wallet. I picked it up. There was no one within 50' of us as I looked around for its potential owner. Opening it, I saw a wad of big bills and lots of credit cards. Instinctively, I handed it to the woman at the gate without a second thought. Thinking back now, I should have taken the guy's name and address and inventoried the contents before handing it over to the ticket agent. Who's to say that she was as honest as I had been?
I also found about $140 in a video arcade on the Boardwalk in Wildwood. It was next to some kid playing a video game. I picked it up and asked if it was his. He said "yeah", so I asked him how much was there. He said "~$150", so I handed it to him and told him to be more careful. That little SOB didn't even thank me.
Well 1st I would say that the money was most likely gotten by doing something illegal.. So I would most likely call the police and make sure my name was attached to finding it.
And wait the customary amount of days and when no one claims it it mine.
I would call the police, have them sign for it in front of witnesses, and return it. It comes back to "Love your neighbor as yourself". If you or the business you owned lost $500,000, you would want it returned.
What you do will come back to you. I would turn it over to the police and make them take a report. If it is not stolen or is not claimed, in Arizona, the person that found it becomes the new owner.
The following is a true story!!
A computer tech had just lost his job was filling up with gas at the local gas station and looked down to see a wallet. It contained $3,000 in cash from a very successful person in the city. Without a thought the man called the other and returned the wallet, even though he could really use that money. The man that lost the wallet was so taken back by the man’s honesty, that when he returned the wallet to the man, on the local news, the rich man reached in as the other was leaving and gave him all $3,000. Moral to the story, you may get what you want by being honest.
I would absolutely return it. It's not mine to begin with, it belongs to someone else. For anyone thinking of keeping it - keep in mind the bills are probably marked as missing or stolen now - and that someday one might be traced back to you, then you'll have lots of questions to answer. Honesty is the best way to go with something like that. It's one thing if you find a $20 bill on the street, it's another if it's 500k.
anyone ever watch "Dead Presidents" in the movie they transport UNMARKED bills to be destroyed... a nice thought eh?
also, i dont know the name of the movie, but in that movie a armored truck loses a cart with like 200K in it, and 3 guys who happen to be broke at the time find it, take it, but get busted with it. its based from a true story, happened out East i think.
personally, id KEEP the money. spend it 20 bucks here, or 50 dollars there at places that didnt have cameras. with my own hard earned money, buy a plane ticket to mexico or Europe a couple times a year and spend it there. but, that money would take a long time to burn at that rate.
A City of Vancouver cop "found" a knapsack full of ONE MILLION DOLLARS!!!!
He turned it in. He filled out the required paperwork, and now, since noone has claimed it, he is now a MILLIONAIRE.
Now, you don't just pick up someone's stuff. You got to do what the cop did. Fill out the paperwork. Chances are, if it's a big sum like that, it's probably ill gotten. A drug dealer isn't going to go to the cops saying they lost a million bucks. And the drug dealer would be stupid to kill you for it once you were on tv.
So, given your scenario, I'd turn in your half mil, and fill out the paperwork. And keep up on it. Don't forget about it.

It happened in Philly. The fool's name was Joey Coyle and he found $1.2 Million that fell out of an armored car.

Keeping the money is honest. It is not like you stole it, you found it & have no idea where it came from.
The local government around here is so damn crooked so I would have to say I would deffinatly keep it. At least I can use it & put it to good use like food.
I'd take my chances turning it in to the local police. I'd take along several reporters and photographers. I'd make them write about an undisclosed large amount of money found in sacks--call to correctly ID. Then if unclaimed after 30 days, I'd go buy that new house out in the country, that new Lightning, that new whatever for the wife, that new.....................etc.
