I have a 2001 f-150 with the 5.4, 60,000 miles. When it is cold,(the engine, and air temp below 45) I have to hold gas pedal to get this engine to run. It will crank up, rev to about 1000 rpm and then cut off, will not run until gas pedal is held for about 3-5 seconds. once the engine warms up no more problems, has happened occasionaly since november, but has started to occur almost every time cold starting. No service codes. Any ideas?????
I would replace the IAC (Idle Air Control). It is located on the rear side of the throttlebody elbow.
One that is sticking will act worse in cold weather.
Did this work I am having the same problem with my 97 4.6 liter. A machanic (whom i trust) told me it was lose timing chains. I would rather change a module than a chain.
Yeah, the IAC is definitely what to check on that. Tap it lightly when it starts acting up, see if this helps. Cleaning it will make it last a little longer, but you may as well replace it at the next available opportunity.
