I read somewhere that there was someone who also had a cold start problem. It just started on my wifes Escape 2001. I changed our the plugs and all seemed fine, but it showed up again. It's only on a cold day. I have to hold the gas pedal slightly down to keep it running or it just dies. After about 3 minutes of this, it will idle fine. Then I can start like normal. Is there something controlling cold starts, like a valve?
It's the IAC. Just had a post about it. It sounds like your justs needs cleaned. It's located on the top of the tb. A replacement will run you about 30 bucks if you have to go that route.
I see another cold start problem.
Can I ask a couple of questions?
What should I expect? It used to be that you would pump the gas to send gas and set the choke. This Intake Air Control has taken the place of the choke? So if it regulated the gas to air ratio? It is electroniclly regulated valve unlike the mechanical choke. So if it can get physically obstructed or electronically malfunction?
Last question. If I take it off and spray this throttle cleaner in it, will I see anything or will it not be a visible change? Ho! Then will I have to replace the gasket.
Thanks!
I did look up sea foam.
I actually cleaned mine this am. I just took it off and soaked it in Sea Foam to loosen the carbon. The sprayed throttle body cleaner inside and worked the valve inside up and down to make sure it was freely moving. Reinstalled, sicne the gasket was perfectly fine. The test is tomorrow am when it's cold. I will report back. If this doesn't work, the it's $90 for th IAC at Autozone.
I am also having cold start idle problems and was waiting to hear if cleaning the AIC did the trick.
I was pointed to rockauto.com for a under $30 AIC.
It's getting colder.
