ok guys the new suspension lift is comming soon for the ole' 78 f-150 iam going with the 9" superlift and iam looking for info on lengthening the drive shafts as well any tips hints or cheap connections for the operation i looked into high angle driveline and well lets say the damn drive shafts would be worth more than the truck and the lift. but any info is much appreciated....thanks in advance
do you not have a local driveline shop.....just put the lift on, see how much you need to lengthen and take them to the shop, or if your handy with a welder/grinder/chopsaw get some tube and doit yourseld, and just have them balanced. if your SWB youll prolly need to do something about the u-joint(s) binding at the t-case weither you have a stock cv there or not, same for your rear.
Try Tom Wood's at http://4xshaft.com/
I recently had to replace both my shafts, with new ones from Tom Wood's. My rear shaft is now the 1 ton version with 1350 U-Jointsand about 3" shorter than stock. The front is a little smaller in diameter but twice as thick as stock, along with 1350 U-Joints, and about 3" longer.
You can't beat the quality and craftsmanship that go into one of HighAngle's driveshaft's.I have one on my Bronco with a 9" lift. There worth the money.
ok new additional question guys .... how much if any difference length wise is there between a rear drive from a swb and a rear from a lwb....iam cooking up a plan but dont have alot of info as of now.....thanks for all the replies as well thanks for any further info
damn 2 feet hurts....i was hoping it wouldnt be that much diff... my 78 is a short bed and was hoping that i could snag a drive shaft from a longbed and just have to rework a little on driveshaft length and or cv joints....well hell that shoots that idea down...thanks for the info
I just called up my local drive shaft shop, a place called Henderson Driveline, and told them what I was doing to my truck. They said bring them the shafts and they took care of the rest. Ended up getting an entirely new rear shaft and slip yoke and a new spline on the front plus both balanced and new u-joints installed. Cost was $200.00 even and it only took 6 hours.
Had the new drive-shafts back before the lift was done being installed.
Make sure that the driveshaft shop does good work. Ever since installing a simple 4" lift and having my front driveshaft reworked and balanced...I get a "bad" vibration when in 4x4 mode. I would have liked to beat the owner...but I have a problem smacking an "old" man.
Now...I have to re-due the front. Will go with a quality unit this time! Buyer beware...is all I'm saying.
