I can run at least 1 year on a set of points, just make sure the condenser is replaced with the points and they dont burn out too quick. Bad condenser = burned points, every time. Just replace 'em every fall and you'll be fine. If you're feeling restless for something to do, replace 'em every spring and fall.
I can get 15mpg on the highway with my truck, with points, I really see no reason to change.
EDIT: OBTW, my brother was running his mustang at 7000+ rpm with blue streak points. They worked great. Lesser quality ones caused flames out the exhaust.
