OK, dumb question time.

I had the inside hood off my E350 for the first time
this weekend (just to take a peek). WTH are the
spark plugs located? They weren't in the outboard location
(at least not above the exhaust manifold).

Are they inboard? Is igntion a coil at each plug so that
there aren't a mess of high voltage wires to give
away their location?

 

they are under the coils, do a search on this forum for, spark plug replacement, and you will find alot of excellent info on plug type, common mistikes, tips, tricks, etc.
