Ok...... ive filled the gaps in my steering wheel on a f 100 and got it looking good.....what do i do now just paint it with regular paint or do you use a special type? Does it have to be primed? THanks for any help
Rob
I have not done this but I seem to remember that after final sanding of the repair standard automotive primer and paint was used. This was from an article I read years ago before base clear systems became so popular.
You need to use a good primer. Also wet sand it after each coat of primer up thru the grits. Use at least 400 grit paper. I would then use a epoxy paint as it will last and has a good glossy look to it. The wet sanding is the key to getting a good looking job. This is how I did mine and it came out wonderful.
Wow Barry, I never thought of the wet sanding steps. I used a primer and then rattle can spray paint on mine. It looks good, but now you make me wonder how much better it would look if I would have done the wet sanding. Well, maybe next time. John
If you do the wet sanding, you'll learn to hate it! My hands were so sore from the numerous times I sanded and primed, sanded and primed, I have 2 more to do, but they're still sitting undone! It's worth the effort to do it as it came out like glass.
Kit of stuff I bought from Eastwood had a degreaser that you used after sanding the wheel and epoxy repairs - this was followed by an etching primer - then sand again - then used a higher build primer - then sand again - then I used black appliance enamel paint (very durable I'm told) and color sanded it several times. Came out very nice and makes the rest of the cab look lousy!
