Gloss enamel in a spray can probably wont hold up long. Prep has a lot to do with durability. Id recommend a good catalyzed epoxy primer X2 coats, followed by a catalyzed acrylic enamel at minimum. A urethane would probably be better.
I recently used spray can primer then used a enamel spray paint. I took time to prep it well and fill in all of the age cracks. It turned out looking amazing (much better than I thought it would). I would say its a great way to paint it but I just don't know how long it will hold up.
Do yourself a favor...if you go the DIY route...use high quality primers, paints and clear-coats. I restored
my wheel a year ago and it's still pristine.(used daily in Hot CA sun) I use PPG for all the above...only thing
really, is it costs a bunch to get the materials...literally, several hundred dollars...the price of a new wheel!
(But the new wheels are only Black)
As I use all these paints regularly, it wasn't a big deal for me...but you might be best taking your wheel to an
auto-body shop and have them do it?? Might cost you $50-80?
One thing I've learned, nothing on these trucks is cheap to do...you could rattle-can it with your primer and
color of choice and a few coats of clear...but I doubt it'll last.
Spray can sounds nice and easy but how long will it stand up to your hands over time? Luckily I happened across a beautiful turquoise wheel that is pristine. Given that all I need to do is scuff the surface before shooting with Holly Green paint. The paint will be PPG Concept single stage urethane. Now if I had a new black wheel I would first clean well and coat with a flex sealer to promote adhesion before moving onto a primer and color coat.
