Had the oil changed last week and the service guy showed me that my rear differential fluid was "milky" and full of bubbles. Even though the truck has only 16+k miles on it he said that it should go 50k without a change to the dif oil, and I might have something going on thats breaking down the oil (it has the LS option). What do you guys think?

My thoughts are water or condensation within the dif.
Did you go through any flooded areas or roads in the past?
Did you have trouble with the ls when the truck was newer?
Did some one mix synthetic with standard gear lube?
Me I'd change it ,be safe than sorry!

The only time that I've seen "milky" oil is when it has been contaminated with water.

You should never have to change your rear diff. fluid unless it is submerged in water. (so says the manual) Or, as it looks in your case, contaminated with water.

Condensation,clogged vent,four wheeling deeper than the vent,many short trips with very little hwy.use to warm up and evaporate moisture.
I'm not saying it is,but I'm throwing these possibilities out there in case it is water.
I'd be really careful with this problem outpost... In my "young and dumb" years, I had an 81 F250, that I "used"..I went through water, mud, snow, everything imaginable and one day, 150 miles from home, the axle sheered off... Long story short.... when they took it apart, the gear lube was milky white.... $1500 later (this was in 82)I was back on the road...
The only "water" I can think of going through is once I launched my B-I-L boat in Lake Mead and had to back in up to my rear axle to get it launched. That might explain it....
When they added new lube did they also add friction modifier?
I once had a rear axle cover weep repaired under warranty at the dealer and before I got home I knew they forgot to add a few ounces of the stuff.The clutches aren't smooth around corners without it.
we had a 94' one ton dually that the top of the cover rusted out on it. the reason was that we didnt drive it that much(sold in 2000 w/ 65,000 miles on it)and condensation built up in it. so, when the pan gets removed look at the top of the cover to see if it is all rusty and you will find out if this is or isnt the cause.

Yes they did. I called them first to see if they had it, and they purchase it directly from Ford. Thanks to these forums, I was ahead of the curve on this one
