First oil change...

OK so i am going to do my trucks first oil change since i bought it. They told me they changed the oil and the oil looked ok but i still don't know so i am going to do it. My truck has 170K and i am thinking about using Delo 400. Is Delo400 good oil? I wanted to go full synethetic but its 30 dollars a gallon and i am kinda broke right now
What do you guys suggest?

Alot of folks use Rotella Synthetic 5w-40. It is usually readily available at Walmart for $19.50/ gallon. That's what I use and where I buy it.

I think i saw that at my autoparts store. I didn't look at the price. Nearest Walmart is like 50 miles away.

Save up and do it right. Replace the fuel filter in the bowl, check the transmission and diff also. People tend to neglect a vehicle that is for sale.

Regular Rotella T 15w40 is a fine oil and only 12.50/gal. I used Castrol Heavy Duty 15W40 from Autozone at only 7.50 a gallon for my last change. Engine seems to have no problem with the oil. Make sure that you only use the Motorcraft filter though. That seems to be the most important part.

I run Chevron Delo400 and haven't had any problems with it. 11 bucks at the walmart. like said above, only use a motorcraft filter...I think they are 10 bucks at Oriellys.

Why a motorcraft oil filter? What about the Napa Golds?

I run Delo 400. It's good stuff with a great additive package. I run a 5000 mile OCI with Blackstone analysis, which by the way, always comes back strong. My wear metals are consistently below average and additives remaining, above average. Great engine oil and inexpensive too. I know there are a couple folks here that run it and have over 250K miles on their 7.3's. Hopefully they'll chime in.

I second the oil analysis, especially with a new to you truck. I would run the oil that is in there for a couple thousand miles if you really believe it has been recently changed. Then change it, grab a hot sample and send it off to Blackstone. It is a good idea to start off with a snapshot of what you have. Good to know if there are any coolant or fuel traces in your oil. Not something I would do at every change necessarily but especially on a newly acquired truck. I have done 2 analysis over an 8,000 mile period with DELO 400. I wouldn't use anything but DELO. Great additive package.

The Motorcraft filter number you want is FL1995, I think I paid 10 for last one at wally world. I'm not sure about Napa Golds filtering abilities but I'm sure it has to be better than Fram's. Our trucks will run on about any oil you want to throw in it, just make sure you stay on top of everything and your truck will be very good to you!

How much does it cost Blackstone to check out my oil?

So Delo400 has good additives in it or you guys are adding additives?

I've always run Napa golds, even on my racecar so i was just wondering if there was something different with the motorcraft oil filter that i don't know about.

You can never go wrong with the OEM filter. Most of the oil (Delo, Rotella) is good oil. If it wasn't any count it wouldnt be around still. Just make sure ou change it religiously and you will be fine. Also look into changing the diff fluid as well. I used mobil 1 fully synthetic in the diff
