Squealing Transmission

I noticed today that if I'm flogging my truck, the trans squeals like a pig. Heard it when I was merging with freeway traffic, happens right before the trans shifts under full power, while it's shifting, and for a millisecond into the new gear. Only happens when I'm giving it hell, driving around town it's perfect. Any ideas on WFT this is?

Oh yeah...I'm at 9645 miles now...dang and I just got my truck four months ago??

I get a squeal when mine shifts into second, but mine is belt squeal and I'm to lazy to fix it. Only happens when I'm hard on the throttle.

I get the same thing when shifting into 2nd under hard acceleration. Always have. The question is, what's the best fix? Shorter belt? Maybe some of that belt spray? (I've also been too lazy to get around to it, probably should though)

Mine did it too. I bought a new belt and have been squeal free.

Munkey, it probably has to do with the engine being placed under load.

I wouldn't try a shorter belt. That's like a band-aid for a sucking chest wound. Same with belt spray.

The belt has a tensioner. So you do not tighten it like belts of yore. I would suspect that it is in need of replacement. All of you should still be under warranty.

Actually the thinking is that this has happened since the truck was new (and to several others as well) so assuming that if the belt's not bad, then it's just too big (if by only an inch or so). Just thinking here, but the shorter the belt, the tighter the tensioner pulls on it. This could have adverse effects if you go too short, but for only an inch I doubt it. I'm curious if V10man got the same size belt; sounds like it. It's more like full gauze field dressing for a splinter in the thumb. But hey, but if the splinter goes away.... :+

Good suggestion, just hate to leave the truck with them. Seems to come back with more things wrong than I gave it to them with, but that's another thread.

Point well taken!

Darn shame if that's true for you. :-(

I have the exact same noise that Munkey describes. It only occurs at WOT. Every new vehicle we've owned has had the same noise- '97 Expedition, '00 F150, '00 F250, '01 F350 and our '02 F150 S'crew.

The key, to me, is that the squeal only occurs on shifts at WOT. Makes me think the tranny is slipping so it doesn't grenade on the upshift. Seems that pulling a 8'x11'x25' 7000# trailer up a hill at 4500 RPMs would also cause enough "load" on the engine to make the belt slip- but the noise never occurs under those conditions.

BTW, I really don't think it's anything to worry about. :-)

I had a similar problem that was very hard to find, until it got really bad. Just before a shift to second it would squeal big time.
Pulling my RV was worse, I guess due to the load. Believe it or else, it was the muffler. The baffles were loose and it would set up one hell of a sound. It finally got so bad even the dealer could figure it out. They put the new one on and after 3000 miles, still no noise.
