I have recently noticed that my running board lights come on for what appears to be no apparent reason. This happens when the truck is locked. They don't always stay on either. The other day after the truck sat for two days without being run, I found the battery to be dead. Was wondering if anyone else has seen this before and if so what could be the cause.
On older cars, there used to be a spring-loaded switch that controlled the dome lights...when the door opened, the dome lights would come on. When the door closed, it would press on the switch and the dome lights would go off.
On a lot of newer Fords (Expys and Rangers come to mind) the dome lights (and hence, the running board lights) are controlled by several things, including use of keyless entry remotes and the door latches. Rather than using separate switches, the door latches have a switch built into (or on) them that signals when the doors are open (and hence when the lights should be on). These are notorious for sticking. A good shot of WD40 up into the latch area helps a great deal.
If this was the problem, I'd expect that the dome lights would also be staying on...and I thought Expys had a limiting switch that shut off all of the courtesy lights after 45 minutes or an hour or something to prevent battery death...
Hey Farmlaw, That makes sense to me now. I'll give it a try. However, I think it might be something else as the lights will just come on for no apparent reason and then go back off for no apparent reason. Thanks for the help.
