Lookin at gettin a 92-95 f-150 and wanted to know whether it would be better to get a manual or auto trans. Will have a 6 inch lift and 35 bfg muds and will drive on highway and haul loads in truck bed. Which trans would be better for this and more tougher and reliable. I have herd the E4OD trans isnt to good. IS that true? Also does the negine matter when it comes to which transmission to get. Will either get a 302 or 351w. Thanks
I think you can get auto or manual in those year/engine combinations. The stock manual 5 speed is the Mazda designed M50d?. It is useable but not known for durability when abused or hauling heavy loads. I have one with 120,000 miles on it now and it is still working great (knock on wood), but I also use the truck for commuting and save heavy loads and most towing for my other truck. I think you should decide which transmission suits your personality first (auto or manual) then decide which model will suit your needs the best. I prefer manual for the control and simplicity of it but it is more work to drive and ties up your hands from eating fries on your way camping - my biggest complaint.
I am not sure if you can get a manual with the 351. I too have a Mazda 5 speed and it is working great with 140k on it, but I know and feel that it is not good for hauling. Most of the miles are easy and cummuting. I don't drive it as much anymore, and use it mainly for hauling stuff now, but it is a little light for what I use it for.
I like having a manual, but if you really want a tougher and reliable tranny, I would recomend the E4OD. They hold up good if you do proper maintenance on them.
In my case, I want to put a ZF 5 speed in if the Mazda throws a gear.

Also, the Mazda is geared really high. I have a 3.08 rear end. It is real tough on the clutch to get going from 1st when towing sometimes. That problem could be worse with larger tires.
would really like to get a 94 or older so i wont have all that sensor obd crap and i really want the 351. would the E4OD in a 94 be reliable. would most of the problems with that trans be worked out by that year?
OBD-II is 96 up. Look for a 95 to get the best E4OD. Some late 95s are allegedly OBD-II. Look for one with the diagnostic connector under the hood, that cannot be OBD-II
