I have a 96 full size Bronco w/302 and auto trans. I do a lot of off road driving and the auto trans is just not getting the job done. I would like to swap the auto for a 4 or 5 spd manual trans. Has anyone done this ? are there any conversion kit available?
the best tranny for the job would be a ZF 5speed. you can find them in f250s and bigger. it wont matter if its bolted to a 351w because the bellhousing is the same. if you can also get the tcase with it if its the same style you have (manual shift for manual shift) type thing.
I would not mind doing it to my Bronco down the road too. I just don't want to mess with adding a clutch pedal. Also, would I have to change the driveshafts because of length issues? Would one bolt to a 302?
Kemicalburns can I replace my C-6 tranny in my (Bronco with a 351) for an AOD? So if I snag a AOD out of a 302 it will bolt up to a 351 with no problems then?
yes, the AOD will bolt right in. if you get one , it must come out of a 4x4, get the crossmember and the tv cable plate that bolts to the throttle body area so you can hook it up. what year is your rig sproutW. also you will need a different flexplate. go to any parts store and buy a flexplate from an early 80's crownvictoria that had the 351/aod combo. its around 50 bucks.
I have 2 1989 Broncos, one with the 351 C-6 combo and the other is a 302 with the AOD combo. The 302 bronco may go to heaven and I was thinking of taking the AOD and swapping it out with the C-6. I was wanting an overdrive for the 351. Hope that answers your question?
i was thinking of doing the same thing to my '91 bronco (putting in a manual, cause i hate automatics with a burning passion), i like the 5-speed from my f150.
i asked around, and it sounds like id have to rebuild the engine, cause my dad said that id need to put a flywheel in and balance it to the engine, cause the automatics, he said, dont have a flywheel, just a ring gear. or...i could find a 302 with a 5 speed and put the whole thing in.
its should be an easy swap sprout so go for it. i suggest you take the c6 , mount it behind the 302 and sell it. probably get rid of it for a grand or more.
Thanks Kemicalburns just was checking. Thought it was weird because you never see an AOD behind a 351 and thought they might not transfer. Will the AOD handle the 351? I've heard the AOD it is a light transmission from some and others say it will handle the 351 just fine. Thanks
