[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Dec-01 AT 08:59 PM (EST)]Apparently I'm in the minority here but what would be involved in switching to an auto transmission from my stock 5-speed? I have a '91 F150 2WD with the 300/6 and the 5speed manual trans. Which auto trans would be best? Thanks for any comments.
Well I just did the same swap this summer so here goes. Mine was alittle more complex due to my truck being a 4x4. I swaped in a new 302 and went from a 5 speed (mazda) to a C6 I keep the BW1356 xfer case.
With a 2wd it is really straight forward. You will need the transmission, flexplate, torque converter, tranny cooler or new radiator with one in it, new steel lines for the tranny, steering column, and depending on what u use maybe a new drive shaft. (I had to get 2 new ones made up, shortened one and lengthened the other) Besides that there are little misc. stuff you will need.
Depending on what tranny u use, AOD,E40d, C6, C4 will determine alot also. With the E4od you will need a new computer to handle the tranny. I would stay away from that, go with a C6 (bulletproof), or an AOD for the OD. Make sure you get the right flex plate other wise you motor will be out of balance and that is bad.
If you have any questions let me know. God knows I have spent enought time under my trucks or friends trucks.
