I have a 99 7,3 PSD with 51K miles and until now has never shown any problems.
First I noticed that it takes longe to start, usually it would start right up, then I would have to hold the key longer and longer until today it just cranks not ignition. I do normal driving no heavy towing.
Any thought?
Check your batteries, mine exhibited similar problems as you describe. One of the batteries was “Toast”, it would not generate enough power to start the truck. Your local parts store should be able to perform a charging system diagnostic. Best of luck…Jeff…OUT

Symtoms, cranks but doesn't start. If it cranks over it isn't the starter relay, starter or starter solinoid. You didn't mention the age of the batteries. They may not have enough power to start but enough power to crank it over. Your location is not posted so we don't know if it is cold in your area. If it were mine, batteries >=3 years old, replace. You would have to do it soon anyway.
If that doesn't help try hooking up your block heater and see if that helps the starting. If it does then it is glow plug/glow plug relay system related troubleshoot the relay and or replace plugs as needed.
If it still doesn't start but will crank, could be your CPS. Heck, lots of people carry that as a spare.
Easy things to check anyway, HPOP reservoir and fuel filter.
Good luck
Check your batteries, like the boys said, one battery might be good and the other bad. At this point you dont have enough juice to turn her over, especially if your in a cold climate. If this is your problem be sure to replace both batteries at once.
Is it just my browser, or is something else going on? I don't see the word "battery" in any of the posts above. I had the same problem with another thread.
If his truck is cranking normally, I'm inclined to think glow plug relay. Even one or two defective glow plugs won't keep it from starting.
Thank you for all the assistance in the problem.
It was late last night when the problem occurred and I am a newbie when it comes to diesels. So I was not sure about where to start. To me if it was the battery nothing would happen. A lesson learned. Had the suspect battery tested and it failed. Replaced the battery and it cranked right up.
