dissapearring oil

Every 1000 miles or even less I check the oil level in my enigine. And everytime its atleast 2 quarts low. Ive inspected the underneath over and over and I dont see any sign of oil. Where could it be going?
Another thing im a little confused about that i noticed while looking for oil. Right after the transfer case and before the ujoint there is some fluid , some on the truck above the joing and some coming form the joint itself. Is the a seal in there or something or is this normal?

Sounds like the output shaft seal, and no, it shouldn't be leaking. Of course, that doesn't have anything to do with the engine oil.

Lot of miles, could be just plain wear. Could be injector o-ring leak. What does your fuel filter element look like? Had an oil analysis done recently?

Did I miss something? I thought he was posting a problem and we were brainstorming about what could be the root cause of the symptoms he reports.

If an injector o ring has gone bad the fuel filter will have oil in it? Also at start up blue smoke pours out from the exhuast for about 3 minutes.

What brand of oil are you using, just curious? Could be going right out the pipe, burning it, and with the diesel smell, you would not notice it. Are you losing or gaining any other fluid, like coolant?

Did it start losing oil after you switched to synthetic?

That might have done it. Usually in engine with a fer miles on em, if you switch to synthetic, they seem to develope leaks. I do not know why, but now it is a pain to find the leak. Might be the valve guide seals.
Also might be losing it when you start in the morning, 5w-40 is a little thin for a diesel. Is that a typo for 15w-40, or is it 5w-40? If it has a bse weight of 5, i think it is a little thin for a diesel, i would go no thinner than 10 base. I use 15w-40 year round, just make sure that i plug it in.

Fordman, thanks for your help. And yes that was a typo. 15w 40 is correct. Will anything be harmed if I swtch back from synthetic?
