if i take off the pre-cat and cat on my 91 f-250 351 and put a straight pipe on it will this cause my truck to run bad (back pressure) or is it ok to remove this
this belongs in the exhaust forum. your not hurting anything by taking of your cat or pre cat other than the enviroment. when you say straight pipe do you mean dual exhaust with the pipes coming straight out of your manifolds? or did you mean to put a y pipe on and run single?
It shouldnt cause you to burn up your rings or anything like that as long as you dont use big pipe when I do this I always put in an x pipe just to be cirtian but you should get by and its gonna sound great
the pre cat is in place to reduce NOx (oxides of nitrogen) and the second cat reduces HC (hydorcarbons) and CO (carbon monoxide) you don't get a performance increase from removing it unless it is already plugged.
ive heard that when taking the cat off you need to put the oxygen sensor in the new pipe or it will not run right that is if you have an efi. not to sure if its true thats just what anexperienced mechanic told me
It won't be a problem. You will need some type of MIL (multi-function indicator light) eliminator to keep the rear O2 sensors from triggering the MIL indicator (check engine light). Dallas Mustangs has them for the Mustangs...might have one that would work for a 351 equip truck. I'd say a good amount of the V-8 Mustangs (in areas without emissions inspections) have a "off road" midpipe. As far as not seeing any performance gains, I beg to differ. On a 99+ 4.6 Mustang an off road X or H pipe is one if the biggest bang for the buck modification you can make. Gains of 20+ rwhp have been dyno proven. When I add the Thorley headers to my truck I plan on having a catless mid pipe constructed.
Originally posted by EPNCSU2006 You'll only need an MIL eliminator if the truck is OBD-II. Otherwise, leave the O2 sensor as it sits, it should still work.
how do i know if my 92 f150 is OBD-II? and where do you get mil eliminators?
Only 96 models are OBD-II...also I believe some 95's are. The OBD-II system has more than 1 oxy sensor, one before and after the cat. That would require a change, but your truck only has 1 sensor infront of the cat, so it doesn't matter what's behind it.
a company called bassani makes an offroad y-pipe to replace the pipe you are taking off, new pipe, and great quality, and you will notice a power difference. believe it costs around $250, but all done, and bolts up to you manifolds, easy to do yourself. and you do not have to worry about your oxygen sensor, it just reads the gas before the cats.
