6.0 powerstroke sitting outside for 10 years, will it start?
6.0 powerstroke sitting outside for 10 years, will it start?
So I have the opportunity to buy an 06 F350 Crew cab 4x4 dually with a 6.0L diesel that an older rancher has that's been sitting in his pasture for close to 10 years.
The batteries are dead so I do not know the miles. The story I got was that he was driving it and the AC compressor froze up and took the serpentine belt. There are not too many mechanics in this part of Montana and he called all that he trusted and they were 10 months to a year out and one thing and another it just never went to the shop.
I've decided to see if it will fire up and if so, then make a decision whether or not to buy. I'll need to buy 2 new batteries and a serpentine belt (a short one to bypass the AC compressor if possible) and I was hoping to get some advice on what else I absolutely need to do before I try to fire it up. Obviously I don't want to put too much into it before I hear it run but I also don't want to ruin something that could be avoided.
I have very little experience with the 6.0L diesel so any and all feedback and advise is greatly appreciated
Thank You.

I would just offer a price that goes with a non running truck that will take a bit of money to invest into it. Bring a trailer and a couple batteries if you want. Fuel will be bad and there are never any guarantees if it will start. You don't need a belt to get it started.
I find it very odd the compressor failed and he just threw it away 10 yrs ago. I always bring my computer with me so I can check for codes and run a couple tests. It's very possible sitting for 10 yrs; it will have developed some expensive issues

lol, 6.0’s don’t run when they’ve been pampered on, much less when they’ve been left in a field for a decade.
Unless you want an unpaid part time job trying to keep a 6.0 running either leave the truck in the field or plan on engine swapping it ( pretty much any other engine besides a 6.0 PSD is better).

Id read up on 6.0 issues if your not already familiar. Far as fuel goes, we had 13 stand by gen sets that had fuel tanks that probably had that old of fuel in them or older. Problem is possible condensation if the tank wasn't kept full or left empty its prone to moisture build up. I'll bet when you pop the hood the engine will be buried in rats nest material and you'd find chewed wires, the intake/air box etc packed with a rat condo, the heater system as well, and wiring under the dash chewed up. Those little *******s literally ate thru 8 gauge wiring in a then new chevy truck I had bought and did mass damage when it sat for a week. Far as it sitting 10 years, yeah, I can believe it based on places we've lived and the ranchers there.
Given what you are looking at, I would offer a low-ball price then find a donor truck to swap a 7.3, a CTD, or a 6.7 into it (skip the 6.4 entirely).
I had two 6.0's, I enjoyed both of them but as mentioned they needed routine maintenance to keep them in tip top shape. At the time I had a heated pole barn so getting them inside and warm to work on wasn't a big deal.
At this point you couldn't pay me to take a 6.0 that had been sitting outside for 10 years - the critters and the elements have had their fun with it and bringing it back to life would be a labor of love...and I don't love them that much.

Make sure you head to the 6.0 section of the forum and do some reading….and if interested in the truck ask for advice there. 10 years is a lot of time to be sitting and I’d expect some issues in the high pressure oil system. Fresh oil, fresh fuel, fresh batteries are a must. Maintenance records will be helpful. These motors just need decent maintenance and they’ll be fine. If it’s lived its life with poor maintenance you’ll have issues, guaranteed.

Find another hobby like gambling or drinking, it will be more rewarding and cheaper then buying a non running 6.0L This is a project and a fair expense just to get it to run to find out if any of it is any good.
