Hey, my truck is a 1990 ford f250 with a 7.3 idi and a e4od 4x4. Ever since I got the truck when going up hills or under high stress the truck should shudder and grid. Yesterday I was pulling a trailer that weighed about 5-6k. After about a 30-40 min the trans started making a whining and started shifting odd I then came to a stop at that point the truck didn't take off right away and hunted for a gear before taking off I then went to another stop sign where it took off just fine. I then came to a hill and lost all gears and power. Engine runs fine. I then sat there for roughly 20 min before I started it again and drove it half a mile to a gas station where it stopped again. I then waited a hour for a friend and drove a very short distance and parked it. At that point it was making a horrible screaming noise and when I shut it off it sounded like something was grinding or spinning after. To me it sounds like a torque converter but I can drop the money on that and that not be the issue. What's the best way to tell or has anyone able to at least be sure about this?
With the behavior you have described, combined with the grinding and screeching, I recommend overhauling the transmission. I'd give 99.7% chance something pushed a bunch of metal through the whole transmission as it started giving up.
Front pump failure. Considering the age and not knowing the history, a rebuild is my guess. There are so many updates if that transmission is original.
