X2 on the flex plate. A big sign of a bad or failing flex plate is grinding/clacking noise. You know that sound from when you were a kid and let the ceiling fan hit the tip of your finger? Just like that but metal on metal.
Does your starter ever not engage and do the embarrassing "ZING" noise? That's a sign of the teeth not meshing correctly. You can also pop out the rubber plug on the tranny. Hold the teeth on the flex plate with the screwdriver and then manually turn the crank pulley. If the engine turns over but the flex plate doesn't move, it's faulty
