Well yesterday i had a weird "hum" coming from my truck. By the time I got home (8 miles) it had turned into a schreeching/ grinding noise. My trans temp did not climb to anything unusual, 155 or so. It was coming from where the torque converter is. A mechanic that is a friend of the family stopped by and said that just listening to he was 95% sure it was the converter. He also said that he would recomend a full trans replacement. I asked about a converter replacement and flushing the trans but he didnt think that would solve the problem just kinda temporarily fix it. I have read on here that lots of people replace the converter and leave the trans alone. Sorry about the length I just dont know what to do any advice is appreciated.
If the torque converter is toast, it's too late for the rest of the trans. Your friend is right, just replacing the torque converter would only be a temporary fix. When the torque converter goes, it sends trash into the fluid and it goes everywhere. Simply flushing the fluid won't get rid of it.
That is absolutely not what i wanted to hear but thankyou for the reply. I know if i ask for input on the new trans I will get the JW response. i just dont know if i can afford that. is there anyting else that is sort of a middle of the road JW/stock
The big 3 you'll hear of is BTS, JW, and Suncoast.
Most anything else is... well.... cross your fingers.
Oh, and sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But if I were you, I would make certain it was the torque converter going out before dropping major coin.
Thats ok someone had to tell me. My brother in law is a mechanic and is gonna swing by tomorrow or the next day and take a look. I talked to him today and he said there was a small chance a bolt had backed its self out or something along those lines.
ask around, there may be some good tranny guys in your area that can rebuild your trans pretty much identical to a BTS or JW. I had mine done locally for $2400 including a better than stock TC. I did have probs a year later with the trans and they stood behind it 150%. I say that cause the took care of the towing bill and even tossed in a transgo tugger2 kit for my hassles. There are lots of trans builders that are really good in the US. JW and BTS are real good but they arent the only ones. GL, you may feel like your up a creek on this one but once your over it youll be happy this ticking time bomb is good for another 100+k miles!
Make sure its the tranny, I had an alternator start going out and it made a "humming" noise, it sounded like it was coming straight from the tranny and I thought for sure it was the torque converter or something. Then when checking the tranny fluid one day I layed my hand on the alternator after driving and burned the **** out of my hand, I knew that wasnt normal, changed the alternator and the humming was gone.. I damn near changed a tranny when it was just an alternator....
well it started as a weird humming and now it is a grinding sound mixed w a high pitched squeel. it goes away and sounds just fine when i am in drive when i am on the throttle but as soon as i let off it is back
Any chance you could describe the hum a little more??
Sorry not really but i will try. it was just a very soft hum or vibration. kinda seemed to follow the same pattern as the romp romp romp romp of the engine. it was only a couple of miles before it turned to a grinding type noise and now a very loud grind and high pitch screatch. kinda like a chalkboard. not constant but still in the romp romp romp pattern. hope this helps. probably not
