So the truck is a 01 F250 with 101k miles. Changed the 4R100 trans fluid last summer and have maybe drove 5k on it. Went out and drove maybe 50 miles round trip with two stops and noticed there is a odd hum type noise from approximately the torque converter location. Noise is only present when under load or moving. Put it in neutral and no noise so I assume it’s internals of the trans. My thought is a torque converter that’s seeing it’s end. It’s not the u joints or carrier bearing. Any thoughts on how to diagnose further? If it is the torque converter would I be better off replacing just the torque converter or should I do a new torque converter and trans?
Does the noise go away when converter goes into lockup? I would think an internal converter issue could be masked when in lock up (no fluid coupling, no slip)
I lost a converter on my truck years ago. In my case there was no warning whatsoever. Just suddenly stopped pulling.
Also read from folks on here that have had noises and it was in fact the converter.
If something is failing and sending small metal particles through the transmission then it’s wise to rebuild.
Some 2001 trucks also had a mechanical diode (type of one way clutch) which is prone to failure. I don’t know the symptoms though as it’s been too long since I researched it.

no diode on this one it’s build date is after the diode went bye bye. The noise appears to always be there unless I shift to neutral. Fluid level is good, color looks normal.
