69 ford f700 rear end

Well iam new to the site. I have a 69 f700, actually it’s peashooters old truck. I have a question. I want to change the 2 speed rear end to a newer one . I don’t like that just to do 50 mph it has to be over 3000 rpm. Iam not looking for speed , I just don’t want to feel like iam killing the motor . Also I was thinking since you can’t get brake drums for them , I could get one that u can.

Is yours stuck in Low?

Availability of brake drums isn't an issue if you don't need one. IOW, don't let the brake shoes get worn to the rivets and the drums last longer than the truck. Even then, used ones can be found, though not cheap.

I have no advice about a newer replacement rear axle, though it's been brought up in several threads.

Ah, so geared as a fire truck or city delivery. Yeah, that's annoying if you want to move between cities.

What gear ratios do you have now? I will have the axles that are in my 68 n700 available for sale in the near future if you might be interested in them, let us know your stock ratios and ill find what mine are and maybe it will be a match for you.

That 6.50:1 is about right for most gas engines of that era with the 20" wheels they came with. My '73 has 6.17 high, my trans is direct 5th, and the engine sounds happy (though noisy) at 65.
