I had a hose go out today on my 2000 F250 Super Duty in the middle of nowhere while transporting a new bull home and was forced to drive with a fluid loss for several miles. I'll check the hoses in the morning and order the correct replacement but may have to replace the pump. Does anyone have a suggestion for this part? I checked RiffRaff and didn't see a listing for the pump. I'd prefer an OEM pump but would consider an aftermarket if it is as reliable as the stock one.
Motorcraft only sells re-man last I checked. There are several choices on Rock Auto that are new-new, which is what I did when the last one started leaking at the front seal behind the pulley. Been doing fine with it for a couple years now.
I would also replace the high pressure line coming off the pump going to the hydroboost. Its a little pricey but I would stick with the Motorcraft replacement, which is also available on Rock. Is that the one that blew out? Make sure it isn’t rubbing on the charge air pipe. (Jury rig something with zip ties or whatever so it doesn’t).
if the steering gear is original I’d also consider swapping it out with a blue top if you’re in there already, and the other high pressure line going to it from the hydroboost.
Lisle makes a pulley pull/press kit to get the pulley off. 55000 I think it might be. Those cheap Chinese sets off Amazon are junk. Pulley itself is probably fine to reuse.
Brandon & Sous,
Thanks for the info. After thinking about it last night I decided that replacing the main hoses was the way to go along with flushing the system, replacing the serpentine belt, changing the radiator hoses, and flushing the cooling system. Right now I plan on replacing the hoses to the power steering pump and checking out the rest of the system before flushing it. I have some fluid I can sacrifice.
The funny part of the whole situation was the day before my hay baler blew a hydraulic ram toward the end of my hay baling session then this happened. It looks like the hydraulic Gods decided the last week in June was my time to do penance.
I had the high pressure hose blow out on the truck 1,000 miles from home a couple years ago and was delighted to find that the local NAPA store had one on the shelf and it's appearance was an exact duplicate of the factory original hose that came off of the truck and the price wasn't bad, either.
After having 2 hoses break…one advance auto the other Napa it was time to build one. Used a high temp hydraulic hose, with a working PSI of 4000, and heavy duty spiral wrap to keep it protected. Same hose my HPoP lines are built from. Now the factory design with a c-clip holding it together at the pump is no longer an issue.
