90 F-250 HD, 460, 148k miles. No kidding. First gear was getting lazy, taking longer and longer to get up to speed. Then, after towing a small trailer - with nothing in it - first all but disappeared. Pump is pumping, because I spool up with little motion in 1st and then when 2nd engages, the truck goes. No thunks. No codes. Just no power transfer in 1st. So I drop the pan to see if there's any evidence and I find these four slivers. About a half inch long. Look like bits of bearing cage. Not sure it's related. Usual filings around magnet, and not that much actually. Before I got this truck, someone put new seals in it and that might be the only fluid change this truck has ever had. I'm guessing clutches and frictions are toast. Fluid was dark, but did not smell burnt, still, not good. Looks like I might be rebuilding my first E4OD.
There are a lot of updates for a 90. Maybe find a newer core/used one and go through that. That way, it's just a swap out once your done going through the transmission. There are plenty of YouTube video's that show how to D&A the transmission. The transmission bench has a good one, but it's way too boring. Certainly worth watching if you have never done a transmission before.
The term rebuilt is used too often and wrongly used. Repairing is the term I use when I fix a transmission. Most shops and certainly DIY's don't have the tools/machines for a complete rebuild.
