Exclamation E4OD Stuck in 3/4?

Hello all

We have a 1993 7.5L / E4OD DRW that we have owned since new, the truck has 92k and was primarily used at a 5th wheel puller until the early 2000's, the truck is now living it's retired life.

No issues noticed until recently, I reversed out of the garage, put the truck into drive and it felt like it had no power, it could barley move on flat ground, to me it feels like the truck is stuck in 3/4 gear. I can manually shift the transmission into 1/2 & R and everything appears normal.

I have yet to dropped the pan yet, with no drain plug I am seeing if there is any other troubleshooting steps I can do before I waste the new fluid I put in last year.

Looking for ideas where to go next - I understand this could be a ECM, wiring, or transmission issue. All three of which could probably use replacement given the age of the truck, but I would like to figure out what is wrong before I throw parts at it.

I have noted the following issues
Codes Present: 621 - 622 - 626 - 629
12v power (key on, engine off) - to pins 1 & 12 on the solenoid pack.

The first thing to do is to read the codes. Here's how: www.troublecodes.net/ford

Those are electrical circuit failure codes for both shift solenoids, the coast clutch solenoid, and the torque converter clutch solenoid. Either all four solenoids failed at once or you have a damaged wiring harness.

I do have 12v power to pins 1 & 12 - If the harness is damage it would be in the trans harness correct? I am thinking about ordering a new premade harness.

Correction - The premade harness is not for OEM applications.

Update on this - I unplugged the solenoid plug (again) to find the oring was not seated correctly. I removed the o ring as a test and the transmission shifted as normal, pulled it apart again to reseat the oring. Ended up coating the dielectric grease and reassembling - now the issue is back (stuck in 3 or 4th gear).

I am starting to thing the plug is the issue.

@Mark Kovalsky I have the repair harness on order - I am going to pull the transmission harness and check continuity - Going off your signature it appears you would be the one to ask. What else should I look for?

If the harness checks out I guess I can either go to the PCM, or the solenoid?

Update: I pulled the transmission harness from the two connectors in the engine bay, all the way back including the ABS module, MLPS, Solenoid, and 02 sensor.

I used a multimeter and was able to get continuity from the engine bay connections (x2) to EACH PIN on the solenoid AND MLPS. So I believe the harness is good.

If the harness checks OK, look at the connectors for damaged, corroded, or spread out pins. Check each solenoid for resistance, looking for one that is very high or even open circuit.

Update on this:

I replaced the solenoid with a unit from TranStar, and replaced the harness plug with a new plug. The issue still remains, looking for input where I should go from here.

Open up your ECU & check for leaking capacitors & repair or replace as necessary

If good, hey cost nothing but time.
