05 powerstroke non start

Hi all
New 6.0 powerstroke owner here from the UK
Bought the truck from Copart in March and just got it here last week

When I bought it there was no sign of the engine running, as the batteries were flat so they have been replaced.

However I am getting a strong crank but no start situation, as soon as the oil pressure is up the truck tries to start but won’t, with around 200 revs
- i have checked the FICM which is 48.5V on run and cranking so that is good
- Good oil pressure which rises when cranking
- fuel pump is running under the chassis rail
- plenty of fuel in the secondary filter (although it does want replacing- just waiting on replacements) and raises fairly quick when cranking
- injectors all seem to make a noise when ignition is on run
- ICP has been unplugged and still won’t start, however on my snap on computer the duty cycle of the ICP is 35% and volts fluctuate from 0.7V to 1.3V and the KPA ranges from around 4000kpa when cranking.

My initial guess was the ICP sensor was faulty creating a non start situation as everything else looks to be good.

I have read the codes, do have a U1900 code for the instrument cluster but nothing else for the engine except Glow Plug Circuit 2

Someone mentioned downloading ForScan, which I did and these are the results, looking on other forums the IPR is either shot or leaking, however the ICP seems to have a strong reading.

Would anyone be anyone be able to point me in the right direction either the IPR faulty or an oil leak?
I did notice a small puddle of oil on the floor yesterday.
Thanks

The VPower dropping to 9 volts is a problem.

You need 150 rpm minimum when cranking.

You also need cam/crank Sync.

Also, you need to remember that a FICM can be bad and still pass a buzz test and still producing 48 volts.

yeah, that voltage drop is pretty steep.
Might try with the glow plug controller disconnected, or measure amp draw on the starter to see if you have a voltage drop in the start circuit.

Whats FIPW and fuel pressure?

Can you have FICM sync without cam/crank sync? Just asking for my own knowledge.

what is the FIPW? Sorry I’m new to these trucks and I will test it on forscan again.

Hi all

Sorry for the late reply I have been busy and not much chance to look over it

im not happy with the Vpower & Lpower being so low, I have had brand new batteries on the truck and fully charged them, does anyone know what the cause for low voltage could be?

I have tried a new ICP & IPR and neither looked to have helped

on the second graph at the bottom I have put on the Fuel injector Pressure in Ms

i don’t know if that is good or not really!

I would appreciate any help as I am lost with it!

thanks

We mentioned that you need 150 rpm and also Cam/Crank SYNC. Please tell us specifically what you are getting for these parameters.

Also, as suggested by @kbeefy , did you try disconnecting the GPCM when cranking?

I am getting around 200/250 rpm on the dash when cranking, it tries to start and shakes the truck but doesn’t.

Sorry what is the best way to check cam/crank sync? I am using forscan.

I tried disconnecting the GPCM and there has been no difference the V power & L Power are still the same

ForScan will show the PID for Cam/Crank SYNC. It will also show the actual cranking speed so you do not have to watch a fairly inaccurate dash gauge.

You also need to scan for codes with ForScan.

Add ficm sync, cam/crank sync and rpm to your forscan graph.

You might just have a weak starter causing that voltage drop, but your getting enough rpm and voltage for the FIPW to fire.

I'd check fuel pressure. Theres a test port for a manual gauge on the filter housing on top of the engine.

Since these are new batteries, what size are they?

They are 700cca each and 95AH. This is the biggest I can find in the UK to fit the truck!
