To make what so quiet? The 6.0 I have is sure not quiet.
The "diesels are suppose to be loud" thing is just a copout, IMO. If the dmax can be as quiet, powerful and reliable as it is, there's no reason all modern diesels can't be. Ford just didn't do it's homework. Or at least they didn't finish it.
The cummins sounds like a gas motor, duracrap is just as quiet as!!far as the drive-thru issue with my 6.0L have to shut it off everytime i go thru one(doesn't help that i yanked the muffler off)
I work in a drive thru (Wendy's), I find I have to tell the duramax croud to turn their engines off, most of them are as loud as 7.3 powerstrokes. Of the few new 6.0s I have only had to ask one or two to shut down. THe new cummins sounds like a gasser. I wouldn't want one.

The ones with DP’s and big exhaust are very loud………….so does that mean that maybe the DM has a quieter muffler system from the factory? Maybe it is not the design of the motor,
Originally posted by stick101010 I have a 7.3, and am looking for a 6.0. I heard it is quieter. Does anyone know where I can look for all of the ford rebates. I got the DBA last time, but don't know if it still exists.
I just got back from the dealership, complaining about getting low MPG on my 6.0 Liter diesel. The Service Manager and the mechanics all told me the 7.3 liter engines get better mpg fuel economy. I get about 9.8. Love the truck. Hate the fuel economy.

Back when I worked at Mcdonalds all the diesel guys would shut down when ordering, even if they were quiet. As far as the H.O. Cummins goes, it is much quieter. Still sounds like a diesel. The Duramax is pretty quiet, don't know about the new 6.0, never stood next to one.
Well, I may be speeking out of turn here since I got rid of my 7 week old 6.0, but I can't help but put in my 2 cent's worth. Why buy a diesel if you don't like noise? If thats your way of thinking, you might want to ask Ford why they made it quiet in the first place, (just to re flash it & make it loud agian). If nobody minded the noise, why go through the trouble & expense of making it quiet? If there are new noise emmission laws they are trying pass, I have to believe they're failing miserably.
Outwest, My reason for buying was quiet operation, fuel economy, power , resale & 100,000 mile warranty. After the re flash, fuel economy was 9.8 m.p.g. engine would only start when it felt like it, & was louder than a 7.3. As far as the warranty goes, what good is it when your on a deserted road & your cell phone has no signal. Resale? I traded it in 2 weeks ago, 2003 F-250 Lariet Centenial edition loaded. I put on Michelin LTX 285's, an Access cover & bed liner. Truck has 2,700 miles on it, thay are asking $34,500 & it's still on the lot.
You had some bad luck. My 6.0 with Jan build date (and the Oct Flash) is getting about 12-13 city and 16-18 hwy (12,000 miles). Starts great is reasonably quiet(Curious to know how quiet it was before the flash, since I bought the truck after it had it) no complaints, even the seat heaters work great.
