I own a 1942 pickup and the door lock key mechanism isn't working. It used to but just stopped. Not sure if just insertiing some oil might solve the problem. I took off the inner door access panel thinking I would see if the mechanism inside has come apart but it's a whole new world in there and small and dark. Please advise the best course of action.
There is nothing really to the lock. At the back of it, if I remember, is just a small shaft that turns a pawl or something in the door latch assembly. https://www.earlyfordstore.com/colle...or-latch-parts
This might give you an idea of what's behind there.
Most likely one or more of the tumbler pins are sticking. Spray some carb cleaner into the key slot and work the lock with the key. After cleaning it out with the carb cleaner lube the lock with some graphite based lock lube. It's also possible the key is worn to the point that it won't move one or more of the pins into there proper position.
There is a set screw in the door jamb that holds the lock cylinder in place. Lube it well with some penetrant before removing it, as they are usually stuck tight from years of sitting. Use some anti seize on that screw when re-installing the lock cylinder. The tang on the end of the lock cylinder is difficult to get aligned into the latch slot due to the tang wanting to drop down before entering the slot. You can use a piece of tape to hold it straight so it can be installed. I use a small glob of duct seal formed over the back edge of the lock cylinder and around the tang to hold the tang straight for installation. The duct seal will stay in place and still allow the lock to work properly. Good luck!
Thank you Newold46 and Rust wrangler. The mechanism shown by Newold46 looks straightforward but it is awkward to get to. And instructions by Rust Wrangler look impressive and knowledgeable. I will print this off and give it a try. The lock was working for a while. That;s why I want to remove it and take it to a lock smith. Thank you both very much. I will post my success (or failure).
I think I may not have been clear in my description. The key turns easily in the lock. I suspect the key mechanism has disengaged from the mechanism that actually works the locking mechanism of the door.
The door used to lock and unlock, no problem. Then one day the key no longer locks the door. The key still turns but it won't lock the door. Something I suspect has come undone - maybe ?
I would pull the lock. If the lock is OK, then you need to check out the mechanism. Best way to do that is to remove the inner door cover, place a light in the door cavity shining up at the mechanism and have a look. Good luck!
I did remove the inner door cover and shone a light in but couldn't see much partly because I don't know what I'm looking for. I guess what I'll need most is the good luck you sent.
