Wrong bed?

I do know the previous owner swapped this bed. I ordered a 1975 f100 tailgate (Ford Tooling Spec) through Dennis Carpenter. Is this how it should look when closed or is this a bed from a different year truck and it needs a different tailgate? All the lines are lined up, so there is no adjusting this anymore. It fits so much better than the cheap one I bought of Amazon, lesson learned.

As I said in your other post - I think you have a bunch of filler in that corner.

(and maybe the other side too)

It's at least 1/2" thick of bondo on that one side, the other side is pretty close. I guess I have more surprises coming when I sand it down! I'll get this in the works this week. Thank you and I appreciate all the help.

Bumpers that move it rear wards wouldn't hurt. They came with bumpers, yours looks like the TG goes in too far at the top.
Might be some adjustability in the hinge mount holes too.
That right side looks like whomever did the filler contoured the shape a little too sharp too.

'73-'79 use the same TG.

Good catch! It came with new bumpers I have not installed yet and the old ones are about shriveled away. I'll put them on and adjust it best I can and go from there.

Once you get the bumpers in and pull it back where it belongs you can fit it with 80 grit. get some bondo off there.

Trying to reshape that corner with 80grit is going to take all day. I would use 24 grit grinder to rough in the contour, then would come the 80 to smooth it out a bit before reapplying bondo to get it how it needs to be. Be constantly raising the TG to check your shaping. Finish with 120 grit and primer.
Good luck.
P.S. I hate to say it, but I wonder if the real surprise is going to be what you find under all that bondo! I would remove the tail light and take a looks see up in there. I wonder, depending on what you find, if it might be easier/better to find a corner at the J/Y and weld it in.

I believe that's probably where this is headed. I'm in no rush, so all the surprises are just part of the learning curve.
