Need Help Trouble Shooting Fuel System
I am having some issues with my fuel system on my 1977 Ranger XLT, I was curious if anyone here had any ideas. I replaced the carburetor with a new Edelbrock 1406 on a 351W. I have a new external electric fuel pump and have replaced the inline fuel filter between the pump and carb. The engine will start up and run with a good idle, no spiting or back firing, for as long as I let it. But once I shift the truck into drive I have about 10-15 minutes before the engine stalls out and acts like it is out of fuel. I can see fuel in the fuel filter, so I am not sure why it starves its self for fuel. Once stalled out the truck can be started but will immediately die. Then I wait an hour or so and it will start right up and run through the same process again. This was not an issue before replacing the carburetor. I am new to this truck and carburetors so don't hesitate to tell me I got it all wrong. Any Ideas are welcomed, I am been stuck on this for a bit now. I appreciate everyone's time.
I am curious about the ignition issue, could you go into detail on that? I also was curious if it could be a fuel pressure issue. I am not running a regulator and was curious if the fuel pressure being too high could create these types of problems? I appreciate the reply
If hte pump is at the tank it should be around 7psi when it gets to the motor. Could be getting hot/osing suction. When it's giving you trouble look down the carb with engine off and pump the gas. You should see gas spurting out of the squirter. That would confirm you have fuel. Next would be to check for ignition spark.
Sorry for the delayed response, life just gets busy sometimes and the truck takes the back burner. My fuel pump is actually in the engine bay with 3-4 feet of line before entering the carb. I am planning on re-routing the fuel line to rule out vapor lock. I believe the engine is flooding, I am going to verify that, then open the carb. up and double check the floats. If everything there appears to be in order I am going to try adding a pressure regulator and hopefully that will resolve the issue. I have checked for spark and replaced all spark plugs. I will also double check the to see if I have gas when I get back into it. As always I appreciate you taking time to respond.
