Truck suddenly stalled while driving and would not restart. During initial inspection, noticed reservoir was empty and filled with oil. After filling reservoir with oil yesterday, this morning reservoir was empty. Even after filling reservoir, truck still not starting but did turn over. Did notice and have been aware of oil leaking from anti drainback plug in the valley, under high pressure oil pump. Checked CPS, glow plug relay is fine. Any suggestions as to why reservoir is not holding oil? Can there not be any pressure building in high pop? Thank you.
Checked the anit drainback valve and looks mostly dry, where can oil be draining to. Oil is now above hatched line on dipstick so hpop res oil is draing into pan, this possible? Hard to believe the anti drainback valve compleyetly failed to hold hpop reservoir oil when engine is off.
Thanks.
you are probably going to need something like forscan to see what's going on.
I'm not sure what possibilities would allow the HPOP res to drain down. Is it completely draining or partially. I had a situation a while back but mine was because i accidentally use the wrong gasket. Sounds like you may have a few things going on. have you tried unplugging the ICP to see if it will start?
You could have a failed IPR? tin nut still on the IPR? Are you getting any smoke out the tailpipe when cranking?, Tach movement, wait to start light still working, etc. Lots of variables which forescan or similar will help with
Just a guess, but maybe the lpop is pulling air and not refilling the reservoir? In the past, pickup tubes have cracked from the hanger bolt vibrating out, or maybe the pickup tube gasket is tired of being a gasket.
Try a cheap mechanical gauge on the reservoir to verify oil pressure. I think GlowShift makes an adapter.
If it is the anti-drainback valve, it might be debris trapped between the ball & seat holding it open. I can't think of anything else it could be. If you open it to take a look, make sure it's clean so nothing falls in the hole.
Forscan pulling zero codes.
Tach not moving while cranking but f350 is a Nov 01 build and starting in 02 tach not moving is not a true symptom of failed CPS.
Tin nut on IPR.
Wait to start light works fine.
No smoke out of tailpipe.
I am at a loss.
Oil is in Valley but not much. Truck was rulling good, them stumbled and eventually stalled. One battery was bad replaced now batteries are weak.
Thanks
Okay, so you have forscan...what are you seeing for ICP and IPR duty cycle. Also what are you seeing for rpms while cranking?
Seems that you are not pumping oil which is why your truck won't start.
You mentioned HPOP being replaced 2 yrs ago...where did you get the HPOP? and did you install it or a shop?
I do not recall all the details of what's needed for the injectors to fire...something like 150rpm and 450-500 psi on ICP.
No smoke out the tailpipe means no fuel to injectors but that is because you have no oil pressure. So I'm thinking something with the hpop or IPR or the lpop isn't providing oil to the reservoir as mentioned.
I have to download new pid’s to my laptop and check icp and ipr duty cycle. I installed hpop T500 but was before Covid so around 5 years ago, time flies. Cranking zero rpm’s, tried 3 different CPS’s, all motorcraft versions and harness checked out good. Ruled out glow plug relay as well. Unsure why hpop res is draining down and guessing that is issue but added a quart and cranked over but nothing. Just checked fuel filter and fuel looks clean, no discoloration, etc so injector o rings are good.
Why would truck start and drive then stall, could hpop reservoir have just enough oil to start then drain down while driving to cause truck to stall? When lpop fails they go in seconds and not fill hpop reservoir?
