next issue is brakes, the backing plate is there, with a threaded hole, maybe 1” diameter or so. Nothing else, I am assuming s-cams are supposed to screw into the hole? Any information would be helpful. Trying to see if this truck would be salvageable.
Looks like where you screw in the parking brake can for Lucas Girling brakes. It works like an old wedge air brake only uses hydralic oil to release the brakes and a spring to set them.
You can still get parts but they are kind of spendy to repair. I'm just finishing up an '85 C600 with LG brakes. Not the end of the world if the rest of the truck is nice. If you are going to have to spend money on another part of the truck, I'd probably look at another vehicle.
If you decide to restore it, this is the place to ask questions........
The truck does have an engine driven air compressor, is that part of the Lucas girling setup? Lots going on to fix, but nothing insurmountable with engine, pto pump etc.
the front (I assume) brake cans are sitting on the floor board and look regular (if they even came from this truck)
Welcome to FTE. This appears to be a '68. That predates the Lucas-Girling system. If you have an air compressor, that's air brakes, not L-G brakes. This is a CDL truck at 28,000 GVWR and I take it you do not have a CDL. Thus, IMO for you this is either a parts truck or no sale. EDIT ; op has CDL, see post 5
F75 = F750
E = 361 2V FT gas V8
U = Louisville Assembly Plant
C59309 = 1968 numerical series, December 1967 production (Assembly Plant U is pre '69 when the Kentucky Truck Plant opened. Model code F759 does not appear for model year 1976 which uses this same numerical series)
159 = 159 inch wheelbase
No color code. This is a special order truck sold to government. Looks like a government color near the door tag....
F759 = F750, 28,000 lbs GVWR
4 81
4 = Black Ladder & Crush Vinyl
81 = Cab and chassis vehicle
M = Clark model 285V five speed direct transmission
No rear axle code--part of the special order
D = Ford-Rockwell (Timken) front axle, 7,000 lbs capacity
28000 = 28,000 lbs GVWR
182 3800 = 182 Certified Net HP @ 3800 RPM
830006
83 = Government. This truck sold directly to government, probably federal.
0006 = Special Order Number
Excellent! Thank you. I do have a class a cdl, any chance someone has pictures of what the brakes should look like? Or a schematic? I have used air brakes, replacing missing systems is going to be new for me.
Your truck has what is referred to as the Bendix Wedge Master air brake system
Good brakes when they work properly but difficult to repair when the automatic adjusters I’ll malfunction
Many of the early models did not come with the second chamber that contained the spring parking brake
My brothers 68 F-750 was this way, once the air pressure bleed off the only way to hold the truck in place was the transmission E brake until air pressure was built up again
The S cam air brake system was a better setup but can not be feasibly be adapted to the axle housing
The military used that wedge brake system for many years, I think it was because it didn’t hang down close to the ground like a S cam system did
Thank you! That helps steer me away from this project. Would be really neat to run down the road, but brakes are important and there is too much else going on with this particular truck.
