Understood, Bob. When I first fixed the truck up I was saving the truck from a total rust bucket. We didn't have a lot of money in 1998, so I skimped and saved like getting a used bed and fenders from a 1971 F100. At that time it was my daily driver and our second car
I told the body man "I don't need to have it look like a show truck or trailer queen."
In 2016 I was retired, had more time and more money. And we had a second car and a 1970 F350 for my work truck. I fixed it up better with the correct year repop bed, fixed the seat with NOS material, detailed the engine , etc.
Abe if I would have built a show quality truck I wouldn’t think of driving cross country to visit with friends. It’s a lot more enjoyable, for me and Chelle, to have an old we aren’t afraid to it in.
For about six months I drove the F-1, in two different color primers, only a windshield. On one of the last days I was coming through curve in a road leading past a shopping area and as was coming out of a curve I saw a cop with a radar gun. As I passed I saw him lower the gun and start his car. I watched through my rear view mirror as he got into traffic and came up three cars behind me. I made a left turn and he followed me through and flipped on his lights. He pulled me over and gave me a speeding ticket. I figured since the F-2 looked like the easiest vehicle to catch he went after me. The biggest insult is he asked if the truck was a Chevy, I didn't have any identifying trim. Today I can imagine getting a speeding ticket in the old truck.
One Sunday afternoon I'm driving back to college in Lock Haven after spending the weekend with my family in Lancaster. I was headed West on 322. Then just past the 501 intersection, Dennis knows where this is, a State cop pulled me over. Another State cop pulls in behind . They ask me to get out of the car, my black 57 Chevy.
One cop questioned me and looked at my driver's license while the other walked around my car looking at it closely. After a few minutes, the police told me I'm free to go. They told me a 57 Chevy had been stolen recently. They thought someone gave mine a quick paint job but after looking my car over and seeing rust, and chips they could tell my car had not been painted recently! LOL
I was famously pulled over in Indiana for driving too slow on my way to Kentucky for my first Truckstock. The officer was all business. He was not impressed in the least with my truck or the epic journey I was on. After his lecture on slow drivers, he tried to get me on my brake and signal lights not working. After careful inspection, he had to admit they were working, but way to dim in his view. I talked to him about the differences between 6V and 12V systems, and he let it go. I've had some interesting encounters being out and about in an old truck.
It still is March and it was a nice day so I took Old Betsy out to run some errands. I started a project. There is an old park bench that I rebuilt several years ago. The legs need sandblasted and painted again. and the boards need sanded and painted. I thought I'd not be a cheapskate and buy new hardware.
I needed a board to use as feet on the metal legs. I stopped at Lowe's. Then went to East End where your Truckstockers have been to. There is (was) an Amish welding place that sold hardware cheap. That's where I got the hardware foro rebuilding the flatbed for my 55.
I go in the door and I walked into someone's living room. I looked out the door to make sure I was in the right place. I went out and saw an Amish woman. She said they closed. But it was a nice drive. The Amish boys walking home from school loved the truck.
Shortly after I rebuilt it years ago. It must have been Amish wash day.
