Oil leak drivers side

I’ve got a leak drivers side that I can seem to put a finger on. It’s getting all over drivers frame rail, fuel lines steering shaft and up on the inner fender well. I thought it might have been power steering but I think I ruled that out.

oil cooler? Definitely not mixing fluids… idling it doesn’t seem to be leaking much if any other than when I come to stop and it drips down on the front diff and can see drips on the fuel lines above the frame rail.

Probably the engine oil cooler. The O-ring get hard after years of engine heat and allow oil to seep out. Leaks from the cooler show up when the weather cools down.

Many folks easily get their cooler off the truck in one piece. Mine would not come out. Easily separated from block, but trapped between block, frame, and I think steering shaft. Don't try to rebuild "in frame". Very awkward, high risk of pinched/torn O-rings. Oil into coolant is an expensive mess.

After I failed at mine, I saw reference somewhere to unbolting the driver's side engine mount, and tilting the engine a bit to passenger side with an engine crane to gain clearance. That sounds about right for the interferences I had. I suspect that state of engine and body mounts plays a big role in whether close-clearance jobs (3" downpipe...) in the engine bay go easy or... not so easy. Factory assembly tolerances may also play a role.

Hopefully you are lucky (most seem to be) and the cooler comes out and goes in in one piece. But plan for an option to increase clearances if it doesn't come out.

PO installed a 3” body lift so I’m thinking that will help. Thanks for the info

On the 1995-1997 pickups I learned long ago that there's no sense in fighting clearance issues. Undo the LH engine mounts (nuts under crossmember) and use a cherry picker (engine hoist) on the lifting eye behind the AC compressor to lift the LH side of the engine about 1.5-2 inches.

Forgot to update this. Changed O-rings and gaskets without issue. Had plenty of room without lifting the engine. Used Mahle seals/gaskets.

Got a couple hundred miles on her and she’s the driest she’s ever Ben in my ownership
