2025 General Chat
We had talked about going into Bend tomorrow but it was such a nice day that we came up the Santiam (22 / 20) today. We wanted to go into Bend and look at a Polaris Ranger 1000 that Cascade had in stock anyway, so that would save us a trip to Bend tomorrow.
We made it as far as Powers Motorsports in Sublimity. They deal in just about all the major names, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Can Am, Polaris and some others. I've always been a Kawaski fan and they had a number of Kawasaki's in stock with full cabs including a 2024 Kawasaki KFW1000 Ridge XR HVAC with a DOHC 4-cylinder inline 116 HP engine and a 3 year warranty. By comparison the Polaris Rancher 1000 which is a 2-cylinder 61 HP engine. The Kows I had seen on line were all a little bit more than I wanted to budget for. Come to find out, they had a very large factory discount currently on going and in addition Kawasaki Corp. had a Military Discount that could be applied for and if accepted, would be subtracted from the price. When all was said and done, it came out cheaper than the Polaris.
So, we didn't need to race on up the mountain to Cascade in Bend. It's still at Powers waiting for the 72" plow they ordered for it and will install it for me. When I pick it up they are even going to give me a drivers ed class on how to use the machine. Might be a good idea. They say it tops out around 75 mph at WOT.
Downstairs toilet tank guts picked this morning to fall apart so now I have to run into La Pine in a few and get the guts for a toilet tank. Just the exciting, unexpected addition to what I wanted to do today!
I think the prospects are extremely good for it working out very well. May have to pick up some chains, especially since I'll be playing catchup unless we have some substantial melt, but we'll see. It has the highest horsepower engine in its class. Dual-mode differential for the front wheels, 2WD, 4WD with the differential locker ability. Manual dump bed for spring and summer work around the place,
When I talked to the various dealers - Utility Terrain Vehicle people, I showed pictures of our property with snow, snow piles and the drone shots I have of the lane out to the highway, driveway around the buildings, etc. This rig is far and above beyond what the several recommendations we had were. Overkill per se. We'll see. Wheels on the ground and trials is about the only way to know for absolute certainty.
Second part of this is that I wanted a multi-task vehicle that could be used for more than a single task-oriented activity such as a tractor or Lawn Tractor set up would be.
It has become painfully obvious that we can't rely on the Landscape and Grounds Service we contracted with to keep us plowed out. We've already had to hike a half mile into the house on one occasion. When we got back from Washington a week ago, had it not been for the fact we had the 4WD pickup, we would have been walking again. Cars are still stuck in the garage and can't move out because of clearance issues.
After the fiasco over the holidays, we will not be renewing the contract so we needed to become self sufficient in that regard.
