Laser rust remover

I searched and found a couple of old posts about a laser rust remover. They were a couple of years old and mainly dealt with using phosphoric acid products because the laser machine were extremely high priced. Lately I've been seeing ads on a certain social media site for a smaller hand held unit and I've searched for comparable units, all were in the $40-60 range. I know if it sounds too good to be true 99.6% it is. Just curious if anyone here has bought a $40-60 unit and did it work as good as the ad showed, I also have learned 87.4% of items don't work as good as demonstrated. I've seen all of the hucksters at the auto swap meets who weld aluminum beer can together and buff out scratches and rust with their snake oil pastes.

I am asking specifically about the laser rust removers, I don't want any discussions about alternatives like phosphoric acid products, I use phosphoric acid quite a bit with good results but It can be a pain to set up a vessel to use to soak the metal in. I have a number of doors with surface rust and if the $40-60 lasers work I would like to use one of them instead.

Don't do it... even the reasonably capable larger (mini-fridge size) machines of 1-3000 Watts are over $2 a watt.

I can't imagine what a cheap completely handheld unit would be anything but frustrating, not to mention of any quality or safety considerations.

Yeah, didn't think much about them but I was curious if anyone coughed up the money for one of the cheap units.

Never tried one but I thought I would throw out a different experience that I have! The CUT50 plasma cutter that you can get on the jungle web (Amazon) for, I think, $140ish....is worth EVERY penny!!! I gambled and have used the carp out of mine...amazing for the price! Harldy ever use a torch for cutting anymore!!! And you can get a big box of replacement tip parts for dirt cheap too! But the tips don't even wear out very fast at all.

I finally caught an ad for one of the laser rust removers for $48. I did an independent web search the other day when I first started this thread and could only find machines for $3000, most for a lot more.

These cheap units pop up under different names and slightly different designs but I'd feel comfortable in saying they probably are from the same off shore company.

Every one of these ads say time is running out to order one of their units. That right there says "scam" to me but I still would like to know if anyone has any experience with these cheap hand held units. Maybe a "friend" bought one.

I looked into this a few months back. I agree with bmoran4 - you'll probably get what you pay for, and what you want is more wattage. Small cheap ones probably either won't have enough juice to take heavy rust off or will take forever. I'm not sure at what price point they actually are worth buying, but I bet it's more that a couple hundred bucks.

How about this more expensive one I found on eBay?
