anyone use 3m rubberized undercoating?
anyone use 3m rubberized undercoating?
i was reading about this product, but I have some questions
I noticed that on 3m's description of their product, there is no mention of rust proofing. Will rust still be an issue? does the rust form under the rubberized coating? with good adhesion, will rust even be able to form?
I'm slowly learning how to combat the rust on my 78, as I'm going to pull it in the garage soon. I am also looking into other products such as zerorust and rust encapsulator. how would these compare to the 3m product?
cost is not much of an option, I just want a product to help my truk last for a long time
what do u guys think??

The best undercoating product that I've used is 3M rust fighter II. It does a good job of getting into the seams & Gaps, but this is a rust preventer it wont kill or neutralize the rust. You need to eliminate the rust first before applying it.

thx for the response, have you used many products?
the rust fighter is for a roll on application, right?
what would you recommend as far as neutralizing rust? there isn't much, but I don't want it to spread.
there have been tons of threads on this, with all sorts of different names being thrown around, but do any actually work? I been told that you can never actually stop rust, only deal with it. even so, which product will neutralize rust, then be able to be covered up with the rust fighter?
from what i've read, zerorust has the most positive responses. has anyone used this and painted over it or used some type of rust preventer?

I had a 96 Ford Ranger that I sprayed that 3M rocker panel guard on it.
After 1.5 years the rust was starting to show through the black coating. I had sanded and primed the areas - rocker panels, bottom edge of tailgate, underneath the wheel wheels (where paint is only).
I had also sprayed about 3" of the front bonnet. There was a dime sized chip in the paint that was starting to rust. I cleaned, primed and sprayed. Still no sign of it when I traded my truck yesterday. THAT worked great to help prevent chips in the paint. It also looks good!
I think the trick is to get it on there when the vehicle is new. I now have a 04 Ranger and I am going to get that stuff again and spray on those same areas. My hope is to prevent the paint and the enamel from chipping. Once the paint and enamel is off rust starts in right away. If I have a layer of that rubberized coating it may slow the chipping process down a bit.

i've had many, many guys tell me to use zero rust. i was gonna use hyde brand rubber coating, but was told that rust would set up under it.My brother in illinois restored his 64 f-100 and used zero rust on the frame about 4 1/2 yrs ago and it still looks slick as a ribbon. So zero rust has my vote! (he told me you can also get it in spray cans)
