Options 8.7 inch ring gear

So I just got a 69 ford f100 I was told it had a 9 inch ford rear end, not so. It is the dreaded 8.7" 3.50 ratio with open 28 spline axle. My question is, is it a matter of just finding a 9" rear end axle to swap that possibly came out of a ford truck? What are the questions I need to be asking and looking for. I am not well versed in this area as you can tell. If you can dumb it down for me that would be appreciated.

Is it leaking, making noise or is 3.50 not to your liking?

if it's tight, quiet and the right RPM/mph combination then run it.

Swerving suggestion.......

Well, my plan which is just starting at the dreamer stage is to restore the truck and beef up the motor in a rebuild. Mild cam, new heads, manifold, and carb upgrades. I am looking to boost a little more hp. In reading about the rear end everyone seems to have the same consensus and that is scrap it because you can't find parts and its not buildable. Right now it works

Run it, do your engine and see where that and the transmission land, then get the right ratio with the new axle.

There isn't anything wrong with the 8-3/4-inch ring gear (9-inch) rears. The weak point is the axles not the center section. That said those rears are generally considered good for up to 450 HP. Adding traction loc is as easy as swapping the center or having yours rebuilt and there are aftermarket 28 spline axles that are bullet proof. Unless you are drag racing with Big sticky tires that rear is plenty strong.

. Sounds like good advice, its been holding up for 55 years so I'll just go with it for now.
