9 inch rear end question

My grandpa has a 63 unibody that he restored and has a 460/c6 in it. He has the original 3.89 rear in it. Im hunting for a 3.25ish pumpkin that he can swap out. My question is what years of the 9 inch will work with my axle splines and what would be the best ratio for him and what vehicle should I keep my eye out for that would have this ratio?

All years that have either 28 or 31 splines, whichever you have. Do you know?

3.89s are good. But if you want to change gears, you need to consider other things. What is the intended use? What tire size? Load?

As far as going through the yards look for an axle, good luck with that. Plan on spending some money and having a new gear set and bearings put into yours. You'll be happier in the long run.

his should be a 28 spline, i know they had them up to at least 72 in the trucks, not sure if the new body style went to the 31 spline yet. not to familiar with whats under the cars and vans until i stick my head under one..

Im not sure on the splines. The rear is original to the truck. it is an f100. He will just be driving it around not hauling anything. I know he runs about 3000 rpm at 70mph.

1957/67 F100's w/9" have 28 spline axleshafts (R/L is the same-B7TZ-4234-A)). Most 1968/72 F100's also have 28 spline axleshafts.

3.25 ratio very common in 1965/79 F100's, 1975/79 F150's. 3.25 AXLE code (w/o L/S) stamped on Warranty Plate: 1965: 07 / 1966/79: 17

But some 1968/72 F100's have a H/D 9" w/a 9 3/8" ring gear, 31 spline axleshafts (use a different AXLE code).

Some 1973/79 F100/150's have 28, some have 31 spline axleshafts.

Most 1963/79 Passenger Car 9's have either a 2.75 or 3.00 ratio, could have either 28 or 31 spline axleshafts (that are right/left specific).

But, all that's really required is the "drop out" center section, aka pumpkin aka carrier assy, all the internal parts are included.

This is by far the best option. You can always did thru a yard and find another axle as Bill said, but you are buying into an unknown. You could be buying someone elses junk. In the long run, you will be much better off just rebuilding what you have right now. A 28 spline should be more than adequate unless you plan on drag racing.

If ya get a used one ya better plan on at least replacing all (3) three seals before ya try to use it. That is if you use the whole axle assembly. If using just the pumpkin than replace the pinion seal.

It's really not difficult to rebuilt one. Randy's Ring and Pinion is a good place to get the kit. It comes with complete instructions. But it ain't cheap. Remember, "Ya Get What Ya Pay For"

You can buy the differential (side) bearings/cups, pinion bearings/cups and pinion seal from any autoparts store.

The bearings and cups have BIN's (Bearing Industry Numbers) stamped on them. These numbers are used by every bearing shop and autoparts store.

The 9" pinion seal is the same 1961/86.

There are two possible types of axle seals:

1957/73, some 1974/79's, 1980/86's have the seal separate from the ball axle bearing (E0TZ-1S177-CA, replaced B7A-1177-A & C9AZ-1177-A).

Some 1974/79's have a tapered roller axle bearing & seal combination (D4AZ-1225-A Brg/Seal Assy / D4AZ-1177-A Seal only).

I have what I was told was a 1962 F-100 9" rear. but according to the 44 teeth on the ring and 16 on the pinion its a 2.75 ratio. Did any 62 F100's come with that ratio?

2.75 9" ratio was not offered in F100's or F150's until the mid 1970's. More than likely, the center section (pumpkin) was swapped from 1963/79 9" Passenger Car w/28 spline axleshafts.

2.75 was the 2nd most common ratio in cars (after 3.00).

52, The 460 should be much more powerful than the 6 banger that likely came in it. Some folk want tire smokers, others maybe like the big horse but also want some economy.

With the 3.89 he should be able to smoke the tires but at 3 grand is sucking a lot of gas. A 2.75 will slow the engine a good bit on the hi way & might be worthy of a search.

I just saw on tv that a big classic car show is on at the State Fair grounds today. Events like that are a good place to look for those critters.

64 F100 with a 352FE/T-18/3.89 would barely pull 70mph at 3600. And I assume (sold it) that the tag was accurate...was a farm truck, so they may have re-geared for sure. But you were hard pressed to pull 85mph in it before VT and rear wheels began to step on each others toes!!

66' F100 has a 352 FE/ Cruiso /3.25-9" and does 70mph at 2200rpm @ 14mpg

Bobby, The 64 would have come with a 292 V8, 65 was first year for FE 352.
