CD Hot?

Hello Audio Forum!

I'm pretty good with electronics, but I'm not that good with CD's and such.

My 02 SCrew has the factory premium sound with a single CD player. While on a long trip the CD will quit after playing 3-4 CD's non-stop. Once it quits, it displays CD HOT. And when you pull the cd out it is so hot that you can't hold it.

What causes this, and is there any way to fix this?

Is it something as simple as the cd player needing to be cleaned?

Thanks!

I've heard about this a few times on this forum. It's supposed to be normal ?! I remember when I removed the original CD/stereo unit in my 02 XLT it had a fan on top of the unit, so you would think it would keep things cool. So I guess that's not much help

Strange thing is that my 00 ranger with pretty much the same deck, NEVER had this problem.....even though the cd's came out quite warm.

Why does the Cd player need to be so hot? I didn't think that there was that much juice going to the radio....maybe Ford needs to stick a huge heat sink on the radio.

Strange, this is the first time i've ever heard of cds over heating.. It's a good excuse to get an aftermarket one since the OEM units suck.

I purchased a 2001 F150 in October.
All cd's came out of my single cd player hot as well. I'm not sure if it was related to that or not, but I burn alot of my own cd's and when I played these, after 10-15 minutes, the cd started to sound like a phonograph album with a big ball of fuzz on the needle, whish, whish, whish noise throught the speakers. After awhile, the noise got worse and then the cd would quit playing and show CD Error. I thought the cd was maybe dirty, I'd take it out - the cd would be extremely hot. Since my truck was still in warranty, they replaced my stereo sometime in December.

Now with the replacement stereo - the cd's do not get hot. But the homemade cd's continue to have trouble. It takes about 15-20 minutes before the whish, whish, whish noise starts up and it seems to be worse on higher numbered CD tracks. I can eject that cd, put in another burned cd, and it will play fine...for about 15 minutes until the noise starts again. Of course the service guy at Ford listened to me but offered no response other than they could replace it. But it does no good to replace the stereo again with the same result.

I thought I would see more of this on this forum but I guess not? Maybe the people who burn their own cd's don't use the stock radios.

My 2002 Explorer cd does not experience this problem with my burned cd's. Actually I've never had a problem in any CD player with these homemade cd's until this truck.
